GLOBAL STUDIO JAPAN

BRIDGING THE GAP BETWEEN JAPAN AND RHODE ISLAND

During the summer of 2024, I traveled to Japan as part of a study abroad program dedicated to strengthening the friendship between the United States and Japan. Rooted in the belief that design and education can drive meaningful change, the program challenged participants to think critically about how intercultural exchange can contribute to a more sustainable and inclusive world.

Our travels took us through Tokyo, Yokosuka, and Shimoda, where we immersed ourselves in local culture, collaborated with Japanese communities, and explored the rich historical ties between Japan and Rhode Island. Highlights included the Black Ships Festival and firsthand conversations with locals whose stories brought that shared history to life.

This experience left a lasting impression on me, one that I will never forget. More than anything, it gave me a profound understanding of how design can serve as a bridge between people, places, and perspectives. I returned home with a deeper confidence in my design abilities and communication, and a genuine appreciation for the power of cross-cultural connection. More than anything, it gave me a profound understanding of how design can serve as a bridge between people, places, and perspectives.

I am beyond grateful for this experience and the doors it has opened for me. Traveling does something for the soul that is difficult to put into words.

Inspired by the trip, I channeled my experience into a poster celebrating the culinary cultures of both the United States and Japan. The concept centers on two hands, one representing America, the other Japan, coming together through food. The design speaks to the universal power of friendship, carrying the simple but meaningful idea that ‘food tastes better with friends.’
